我校有 5 班中四,其中 2 班開設 M2,1 班 M1。

在學校工作了一些時間,累積了些少經驗。只是,今年我上的中四數學課(M2),感覺和之前不同。

兩連堂,第一堂完的下課鐘聲響起。

以前,同學說:「吓,mug 咁快完堂?」
現在,同學說:「吓,mug 仲有一堂!」

早堂,本應精神爽利,最好「教新o野」。

以前,同學雙目烱烱;
現在,同學面貌囧囧,不到十分鐘,已有七八個「伏桌陣亡」。

引入什麼(所謂的)數學歷史,也沒有什麼化學反應。

剛剛測驗,是關於三角學的。

以前,校內測驗卷不會提供公式。
現在,我提供考評局樣本試卷上的公式表,好讓學生在測驗時參考;學生說:「為何不給所有公式?」(包括 double angle formulae)

我擬的那測驗卷,科主任說:淺。但某些淺的題,比如「證明 \sin 2x + \sin 6x + \sin 10x \equiv \sin 6x(2\cos 4x + 1)」,看同學的表現,它竟變了一道難題。同學把等號左面的三項,逐項拆開,再拆開…沒有方向。

這當然是在下的責任。

新高中,入大學率將會創新低(因為分母由 90 變 200),恐怕,大部分同學或要三年全囧,學習動機和引發出的紀律問題,可以預期。

內憂:範式轉移、低動機、大差異、標籤…
外患:教育制度、持份者要求、門面功夫、收生、殺校…

如果還要加上人事內耗,當教師一早已不是一份「筍工」。

早幾天午餐,同事分享。他友人任教的第三組別中學,將面臨殺校。四十多歲男教師,教授非核心科目;縱有十多年教學經驗,縱是一直勤懇耕耘,一旦「突然」失業,他可以做什麼?我自省:一旦校長炒我,我還可以做什麼?(因為我是火星生物,莫說投資炒賣、儲蓄,連六合彩我也沒有買過。)如果要經常在這種「壓力」下誠惶誠恐地工作,教育還有希望嗎?

還有些活動和 ggb files,從略。

因我期望只有 10 人參與(包括幾名數學老師和數學學會的同學),但喜出望外,竟有 20 多人。過程中,聽到同學的笑聲,偶爾有幾句:「又係 wor!」「噢,原來係咁。」心中暗喜。

  1. Mr Ng, I am an old boy of SFX. I am now also a Mathematics teacher of a band 1 school. But my major in the university is not Mathematics. I have learned a lot Mathematic knowledge from your blog. The questions you raised during the lessons can stimulate students’ thinking. I myself cannot raise this kind of questions. I hope that you can share more your experiences so that I can learn more and enrich my lessons. I am glad that my mother school has a teacher like you.

    Your blog make me recall the days when I was studying in SFX. We always gathered around the teachers and asked many questions. Mathematics is not the favorite subject of the students in my school. They seldom ask questions. What they want is just getting high marks in the examination. If the same activity is held in our school, there will be just 2-3 audience.

    • Nice to meet you Cheung, Xavierian! Thank you for your warm message. I am very lucky to teach in SFXC where many students are smart and capable of asking sensible mathematical questions, esp. in your good old days, I guess.

      Questions from students stimulate and inspire us, math teachers, to explore more and do better. Actually I cannot create something from the void set, stuff I share here in this blog is from students asking and daily teaching.

      Cheung, it is sad to know your students not asking questions frequently and it seems that they are not interested in math. Add oil! Don’t loss the ‘heart’ to them (and I keep telling myself the same thing) and to math (forgive my bad English). I don’t have any super method to make students ‘love’ math, just try to ‘promote’ math and let students see the fun and beauty in it.
